Gum Moon was founded in 1868 by Reverend Dr. Otis Gibson. Through 156 years, the organization has evolved in response to the ever-changing needs of the Asian community in San Francisco. It has been a refuge for Chinese girls and women who survived human trafficking; an orphanage for abandoned daughters and infants of poor Chinese families; and a kindergarten for Chinese children who were barred from San Francisco public schools because of the 1882 Exclusion Act.

In the 1940’s, the Oriental Home and School was renamed Gum Moon. In Cantonese, Gum Moon means "Golden Door". The name implies opportunity for all who pass through it. In 1984, the Gum Moon Board of Directors established the Asian Women’s Resource Center (AWRC) to serve the broader Asian community in San Francisco. The AWRC, which is housed in the Gum Moon building, started with a seed grant and three vocational programs. Today, nearly 40 years later, it is a flourishing family resource center with a myriad of support services for families with children ages 0-17. Together, Gum Moon, AWRC, and the two AFSCs serve over 3,000 women and families annually.

Another one of Gum Moon’s long-thriving programs is The Learning Place (TLP), an after-school program that is offered at both the AWRC and Richmond AFSC. School-age children in grades 1-6 who enroll in TLP receive homework help and participate in academic enrichment activities such as STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/ Arts/Math) and Book Club.

Please help us support Gum Moon by bringing a donation to our Back to BOMA event. We are looking to collect the following donations:

• Backpacks
• Lunch Boxes
• Water Bottles
• Calculators
• Arts & Crafts Supplies

Thank you!
