San Francisco’s Ferry Building: The Icon

This presentation invites BOMA members to the elegant second floor of the Ferry Building for a special lecture on the history of one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks.

The program will explore the Ferry Building’s creation, evolution, and significance in the city’s history, from its construction in 1898 and its rise as one of the busiest transit hubs on the West Coast — and by the 1920s, the second busiest transit hub in the world — through periods of decline, to its restoration and revival as a centerpiece of the city’s waterfront.

Attendees will also learn little-known stories about the Ferry Building, including the nail-bitingly close California election result that secured its original construction and the major engineering achievements that changed its future.

Presented by Tom Gille, BOMA Fellow, San Francisco Historical Society board member, and fourth-generation San Franciscan.

Please note that this is a historical presentation, not a tour of the building.
